What is Screen Printing ?

Screen printing, also known as silk screening, is a printing technique where a mesh screen is used to transfer ink onto a substrate, such as paper, fabric, metal, or plastic. Screen printing is commonly used for printing on a wide range of materials, including t-shirts, posters, banners, signage, circuit boards, and more. It’s known for its versatility, durability, and ability to produce vibrant colors and intricate designs, making it a popular choice for both commercial and artistic applications.

How it works ?

Preparation of the Screen

A fine mesh screen, traditionally made of silk (hence the name “silk screening”), nylon, or polyester, is stretched over a frame, creating a stencil through which ink can pass.

Design Creation

A design or image is then created on the screen, typically using a light-sensitive emulsion or a blocking stencil method. This process allows certain areas of the screen to be impermeable to ink, creating the desired pattern or image.

Ink Application

Ink is applied to the top of the screen. A squeegee is then used to spread the ink evenly over the screen, forcing it through the mesh and onto the substrate in the areas where the stencil allows it to pass through.

The substrate is placed underneath the screen, and pressure is applied to the squeegee as it is dragged across the screen. This forces the ink through the open areas of the stencil onto the substrate below, creating the desired image.

Once the ink is applied, it needs to be cured or dried to ensure it adheres properly to the substrate. This can be done using various methods such as heat curing, air drying, or UV curing, depending on the type of ink used and the material of the substrate.
